Getting feedback (on a piece of content or on your own life) can be emotional.

Here's my number one tip:

Receive it.

Let the person share everything they have to share without justifying your actions or getting defensive.

Trust the individual giving you the feedback has your best intentions at heart.

Then sit on it for awhile (like overnight).

When you're ready to take a honest look at it, start with this question:

What in here is true?

Ask Holy Spirit to show you what part or parts of the feedback you should hang onto and what you should toss.

Then hang onto the good parts and toss the not so good.

What's making you smile today?

When I was in college, my writing professor asked

When I was in college, my writing professor asked us to write these words across the top of our paper and spend the next 15 minutes answering the question.

This classroom full of individuals pursuing writing as a career stared at him as if he’d asked us to complete a science experiment.

“I write to become a famous rockstar writer,” one clown shouted (might have been me, don’t actually remember).

We all agreed that answered the question.

“Write about it,” the professor said pointing to our still-blank papers.

When something bad happened last week, writing about it was not my first instinct.

My first instinct was to complain to literally everyone I could get the ear of. I called people just to complain. I asked for phone numbers of other friends just to complain.

Their responses were variations of the same thing:
“You poor thing.”
“That shouldn’t have happened.”
“How bizarre.”
“This could not have been worse for you.”

While their sympathy and empathy were incredibly helpful, replaying that storyline in my mind was not.

So I wrote about it. And 2,000 words later I felt better.

It wasn’t a prayer. It wasn’t even a rant. It was 2,000 words of telling an unfortunate story until I came to some conclusions, until I found some positives, until I found myself preaching. To myself.

Why do I write?

I write to figure out what I think.

I write to remind myself what I believe.

I write to clear my mind.

I write to process "slim chances" becoming reality.

I write to find freedom. When everything else feels impossible.

And if my writing can be helpful to someone else, you're in the right place.
